Xanten
Xanten is located on the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located directly at the Rhine and near to the Netherlands.
Xanten has 20.000 inhabitants.
The name "Xanten" developed from the word "Sanctos" of Latin derivation.
The city has a long history. 2000 years ago Xanten was as large as Cologne.
Xanten's history began with the development of Vetera and the Colonia Ulpia Traiana in the Roman Empire.
In the 8th century the monastery St. Viktor was founded.
After the archaeological park and the holiday centre were opened, Xanten was awarded state recognition as an area for recreation in 1988. It was the first one in the administrative district of Dusseldorf.
